Worst Mood Ever
Last night was fantastic. I went on a double date with my boyfriend, my best friend, and her boyfriend. I felt like I was on cloud nine the entire time. I got home in the most dreamy state and if I didn't know any better, I'd say I floated around the house instead of walked. I loved it.
This morning, though, I woke up in the absolute worst mood. I can't even explain it. I woke up annoyed at the world. My best friend texted me about something or another and I ranted to myself for fifteen minutes about how much of an annoying suck-up he is. The phone rang two different times and I swore repeatedly about how I'm going to take it off of the hook. I shouted at my dog for barking one time while I was watching a Disney Channel movie that was getting on my nerves anyways.
Have you ever woken up in the worst mood ever?
Was it justified or not?

The Universe - How Big Is It?
Wow.
It's getting close to exam week and my teachers have been cramming things into our minds trying to get the last bit of their lesson plans finished. In my honors science class, my teacher was trying to speed through the astronomy section of our book-- it was a pretty long section. It's safe to say that she got a little irritated with my constant questioning and comments. I'm always outspoken in class, making comments and asking any question that comes to mind, but this time it was different. This time my jaw was dropped in pure awe and amazement.
I know, I know. What's so special about the universe? You've know about it you're entire life! I've never found it interesting. Mercury, Mars, Earth, Uranus... blah, blah, blah. I get it, yeah. This time, though, a light bulb turned on in my head and I realized how BIG the universe is.
"Well, duh."
In all honesty, this is all I have been thinking about the whole week. I'm usually thinking about something else, like my significant other and the new sweater that I bought. This is a change for me.
I mean... I thought the pine tree outside of my house was big. I thought the National Cathedral was big. Hell, I thought my older brother was freaking GINORMOUS. Then I started to realize how huge a star was--- a star! Those little dots up in the sky when I take my dog out to pee before we go to bed. You would think they would be the size of a marble... maybe even as big as a watermelon, but that's stretching it. A lot of those tiny specks in the sky are bigger than the Sun. In case you didn't know, the Earth could fit into the Sun about one million times.
Yeah, that's pretty big. For a STAR. There's a lot of those floating around, isn't there?
I can't even express in words how amazed I am every time I walk outside at night and look up at the stars and think, "That's a heck of a lot bigger than me." It makes you feel kind of small, insignificant. At the same time, though, it makes you feel incredible. It's amazing to be a part of something as big as the universe... that is still expanding.
Next time someone makes you feel small, remember how huge everything around us is. The Earth, the Sun, massive stars, the Milky Way galaxy... the universe.
Yeah, that person making you feel like that is pretty darn small, too.
Time for us is nothing up there. I get pissed off if I have to wait an extra two minutes in line for my ice cream at Coldstone. The universe is estimated to have formed billions and billions of years ago. Stars live and die over millions of years. The Sun will eventually die-- we just won't be alive to be affected by it. It seems like I long way away but... it's really not.
When you're waiting in line at Wal-Mart or Taco Bell and getting impatient, be sure to think, "The Sun is going to take a lot longer to die. I guess I really shouldn't be too worried."
This experience in a high school course has completely changed my outlook on life.
Have any events/realizations changed your outlook on life?

What's the best compliment you have ever gotten?
"I like your toes."
Last year, I moved to a new school and didn't know a soul. The bus hadn't had my stop on their list and so my mom had to come all the way home (she works an hour away and was already at work) and take me to school herself. I was almost two hours late. I arrived at my second period class and a few girls immediately came up to introduce themselves to me. After my horrible morning, they were definitely a relief.
The first girl, Abbey, looked down at my feet and told me, "I like your toes." I had a design on my toe nails from my last pedicure. Those were the first words she ever said to me and to this day we are still the best of friends. It might seem like a small, weird little compliment but it made my day on the first day at my new school and earned me one of the best friends I've had and will ever have.

Mayzie & Me
I miss Christmas break already. Not because of all of the presents and holiday specials on television, but because when I went back to school today, I missed my dog like you wouldn't believe. I had gotten to spend all day every day with her the entire break and it was hard to leave her at home this morning.
Not but a few months ago, I rescued Mayzie (named for the Dr. Seuss character, Daisy-Head Mayzie) from a humane society in the mountains. Her previous owners had just handed her over. She was hardly a year old and had never had a hair cut or bath. After they groomed her, she looked like a completely different dog. When she was at the vet to get spade, they realized that she was pregnant; hardly a year old and PREGNANT. Unfortunately, the dog that had gotten her pregnant was much bigger. If she had had the puppies, it would have killed her. They had to remove the babies from her. She was successfully spade and before long, she was allowed to leave her foster family and come home with me.
Mayzie stuck to my side once we got home. She was deathly afraid of my step-dad, Carl, and we could only assume that someone had abused her in the past. Carl loves animals more than anyone I have ever met and so, naturally, it hurt his feelings a little. Eventually, she warmed up to him. Every new person that comes around causes her to tuck her tail and growl from behind the couch. She does get used to them, though, and soon wins their hearts like she did ours.
We aren't exactly sure what all she has in her. We believe that it's long-haired miniature dachsund and poodle. She is the sweetest dog I have ever encountered. I cannot stress enough the importance of rescuing a dog from the human society (or other rescue groups in your area) instead of buying from a breeder. These dogs need another chance and you might be the one to give them that. Rescue dogs truly are special and one of a kind. She is our third rescue animal (we also have another dog and a cat). All of our experiences with rescued animals have been great.
Have you ever rescued an animal?
Do you volunteer at a local animal shelter?
