  • Mayzie & Me

I miss Christmas break already.  Not because of all of the presents and holiday specials on television, but because when I went back to school today, I missed my dog like you wouldn't believe.  I had gotten to spend all day every day with her the entire break and it was hard to leave her at home this morning.

Not but a few months ago, I rescued Mayzie (named for the Dr. Seuss character, Daisy-Head Mayzie) from a humane society in the mountains.  Her previous owners had just handed her over.  She was hardly a year old and had never had a hair cut or bath.  After they groomed her, she looked like a completely different dog.  When she was at the vet to get spade, they realized that she was pregnant; hardly a year old and PREGNANT.  Unfortunately, the dog that had gotten her pregnant was much bigger.  If she had had the puppies, it would have killed her.  They had to remove the babies from her.  She was successfully spade and before long, she was allowed to leave her foster family and come home with me.

Mayzie stuck to my side once we got home.  She was deathly afraid of my step-dad, Carl, and we could only assume that someone had abused her in the past.  Carl loves animals more than anyone I have ever met and so, naturally, it hurt his feelings a little.  Eventually, she warmed up to him.  Every new person that comes around causes her to tuck her tail and growl from behind the couch.  She does get used to them, though, and soon wins their hearts like she did ours.

We aren't exactly sure what all she has in her.  We believe that it's long-haired miniature dachsund and poodle.  She is the sweetest dog I have ever encountered.  I cannot stress enough the importance of rescuing a dog from the human society (or other rescue groups in your area) instead of buying from a breeder.  These dogs need another chance and you might be the one to give them that.  Rescue dogs truly are special and one of a kind.  She is our third rescue animal (we also have another dog and a cat).  All of our experiences with rescued animals have been great.

Have you ever rescued an animal?
Do you volunteer at a local animal shelter?
